Many women are understandably anxious when told that they are being referred to a breast surgeon, especially if it is not clear what the problem is. A breast surgeon does perform surgery, but realize that many breast-related problems are treated without an operation.

A breast surgeon has completed a general surgery residency training program. Recently, fellowship programs have been developed to provide additional breast-related surgical training, but the majority of breast surgeons in this country have not completed a fellowship as these programs are relatively new. A breast surgeon may, but does not always, focus entirely on breast conditions. In my case, 100% of my practice is devoted to the care of patients with breast conditions, so all of my continuing education and research involves staying current in this rapidly changing field.

A breast surgeon is trained to evaluate and manage patients with breast pain, benign lumps and cysts and abnormal mammograms, in addition to breast cancer. It is important to realize that the majority of benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions do not require surgery. The use of breast ultrasound for evaluation and for procedure guidance is an integral part of my practice, and minimally-invasive as well as non-operative procedures are often used where historically surgery might have been the only option.

There are many more options available today for women diagnosed with breast cancer than ever before. While my focus is on the surgical aspects of treatment, patients with breast cancer should be treated as part of a multidisciplinary team involving a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon and other support personnel. Continuing education by reading journals, attending professional society meetings, and performing research allows me to stay current not only in my techniques and procedures, but also allows me to be aware of the advances being made regarding recommendations for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, molecular testing, genetic testing, and other areas.

I have found the decision to transition from a general surgery to a breast surgery practice over 10 years ago to be an incredibly rewarding one. I am also proud to be serving as President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the primary leadership organization for surgeons who treat patients with breast disease. It is truly exciting to practice medicine at a time when so many advances are being made.
